Richard Henry 2010 |
” Richard Henry one of the founding fathers of the new Zealand Kakapo colony, his namesake Richard treacy Henry was a pioneer conservationist and kakapo expert during the mid 19th Century. Richard is credited with developing the world’s first offshore wildlife reserve at Resolution Island in the Milford sound. He translocated hundreds of Kakapo in the hopes that the island would provide protection from predators, but by 1900 stoats reached the island. His efforts were not in vain, as offshore islands now successfully provide the only sanctuary for many endangered New Zealand species. Richard Henry the bird died earlier this year. “
